Hey Mommy ...

As she's drifting off to sleep, her eyes open again and we have this conversation.

"Hey Mommy... why did the Fairy Godmother make Cinderella leave the ball at midnight?"

"Well, the magic ended at midnight, so Cinderella had to leave before the magic ended."

"But why did the magic end at midnight? Why couldn't Cinderella stay at the ball?"

"That's just the way the Fairy Godmother made it work. Wouldn't it have wonderful if the magic could have lasted forever??

"Well, no ... she could have just made the magic last until the ball ended. Then Cinderella wouldn't have had to run away."

Very true.

Tiny Shoes

I got these tiny shoes at Target when I was pregnant with Luke and every time he wears them, they make me smile.

They make Luke smile too.

BOB Books

After Luke was born, my Mom told me she would have Mary reading by the end of the summer. I told her that it took me an entire year to teach Mary her alphabet, and she most definitely would not be reading in two months.

I was most definitely wrong.

My Mom pulled out all of the phonics books she used when we were kids and had a reading lesson with Mary every day. In no time, Mary was reading any 3-4 letter word with a short vowel sound. AWESOME, but very limited as to what she could read on her own. I found these great little BOB books on Amazon that Mary could read all by herself. I ordered them for her and she thinks they are hilarious! I am thankful that I had the camera close by to capture her excitement at being able to read an entire book by herself.

How fun is this? She gets so excited when the letters come together to form real words, and then those words come together to form sentences that go right along with the pictures on the pages. Mary thinks it's pure magic and it is! Isn't it wonderful?!

Head Lice and Haircuts

My worst nightmare come true.

Paul called me into the bathroom one night to look at "these things" on Mary's hair. They looked like tiny sesame seeds attached to each strand of hair. I went straight to the computer, did a google image search for "lice eggs" and then promptly drove to CVS for a lice treatment kit. We never found any actual lice, but where there are eggs ... there have been and will be lice. Sick, sick, sick.

Mary was a good sport about the whole ordeal. As long as we told her that there weren't actually bugs in her hair, YET. I scrubbed her head down with the lice shampoo, washed it out in the sink, then coated her head with some gel while I combed out every inch of her head with the lice brush, then we washed her hair all over again, stripped the linens off the bed and washed them in hot water with bleach, sprayed down the house with some lice spray ... and finally got the girl to bed.

I woke up all night swearing my head was itching (isn't your head itching just thinking about lice?), so I gave myself the lice treatment and made Paul comb out my entire head, just in case. He didn't find anything, but now I sleep better at night.

While our thoughts were fresh on our unkempt hair, Paul pulled out the clippers to give Luke his first haircut. We didn't want to leave him out of the fun.

(He had to handle the clippers for awhile before letting Paul finish the job.)

We now have two freshly groomed children and one handy little lice brush that we are hoping to never use again. I will now be searching Mary's scalp like a Mamma Gorilla on a regular basis.

7 Months

Luke turned 7 months old, two weeks ago. Before another month rolls around, let's talk about this little guy.

(At his 6 month check up)
Weight: 19 1/2 pounds
Length: 28 inches
Last month he learned how to climb and started pulling up on and cruising along anything he can get his hands on. He started devouring baby food, taking a bottle, and babbling "dadada" and "bababa" and squealing like a banshee (mostly at Mary). He smacks things if he wants them (particularly his highchair if he wants more food, or my leg if he wants me to pick him up) and he is so ticklish. He is down to two naps a day, and shuts down for the night right at 8:00pm, with his thumb in his mouth and his blanket in his hand. He has a newfound love for the bathroom, and he has one speedy little crawl whenever he sees the bathroom door left open. He loves bath time and waves his arms and kicks his legs squealing like a maniac whenever he hears the bath water running. It's been a good month with our tiny man.

xoxo Love you Luke.

???

Well, that was short lived. Not even an entire hour before the random comments begin again.

Un-Private.

I just made my blog un-private, or (as a brilliant person once told me) "public."

I went private because I was getting really odd comments from people I've never met. I just figured out how to restrict my settings so hopefully random creeps won't be reading my blog anymore (google won't list it as a public blog and search engines won't list it either). Wish I would have known sooner. Happy un-private/public blogging to me again.

Christmas List

Mary just made her Christmas list this afternoon (we need to get it to the North Pole before it's too late!).

Mary's List:

-a soft doll that she can cuddle with (she has to have a pretty face and a blue dress).

-a white airplane that little toy people can ride in (it has to have a blue door)

-a pink bouncing ball (that she can bounce all over the house while Luke isn't sleeping)

-make up (it has to have lipstick and that pink sauce stuff you can rub all over your face)

-a scooter (it has to be pink ... except Santa already has a different color scooter for her so we'll work on this one)

Let's hope Santa gets this list on time, girlfriend is specific about what she wants.

Mark this day.

As the first day in Luke's life that he was ever mistaken for a girl.
