What Makes a Rainbow?!

Mary has an awesome imagination. She loves all things make-believe and pretend. She gets very grumpy when I call her "Mary" when she is in fact "Ima" the butterfly/zebra/octopus . . . take your pick (Ima is her favorite alter-ego). She also gets very grumpy when I call her "Ima" when she is "JUST Mary!"

She seems to have a good idea of what is real and what is just pretend. She tells me that things like unicorns, and fairies, and monsters don't exist in this land. Where they exist, she's not sure, but she know they don't live here. One day she asked me, "Mommy, do rainbows exist in this land?" She was lumping rainbows in with all of those magical, pretend things that exist in some other land.

She had never seen a rainbow! (that she could remember)

Since we were at my Mom's house, we pulled out a book from my childhood called What Makes a Rainbow? We read all about prisms and water and light and figured out how rainbows are made.

Mary went to help Oma water the garden and voila! ...

"Rainbows DO exist in this land!"

Just our luck - a few days later we got a real rainbow arching all the way over Oma's house.

Mary thought this was pure magic. 

Now she's waiting for me to bust out the book What Makes a Unicorn?
